Colorado offers stunning backdrops year-round—from wildflower-filled meadows to snowy alpine peaks. But choosing the best time to elope in Colorado can make a huge difference in your experience. Below is a season-by-season breakdown with the pros, cons, and ideal vibes for each time of year—plus a month-by-month cheat sheet to help you find the perfect date.

Month-by-Month Highlights

Colorado is so unique in that it can dramatically change from one month to the next. Even just a few weeks apart can feel completely different. In March, you might be snowshoeing through fresh powder, while in April, the same trail could be muddy with patches of wildflowers blooming. September brings crisp, golden aspen leaves and mild temperatures, but just a few weeks later in October, snow can dust those same trees. These month-to-month changes mean you need to plan with flexibility—and keep an eye on the elevation. A 30-minute drive or a month difference can completely transform the landscape, lighting, and weather.

MonthKey Highlights
JanuaryPeak snow. Great for skiing or snowy forest vibes. Coldest month.
FebruarySnowy but with more sun. Great for a private winter escape.
MarchTransitional—snow still present, but some warmer days. Early spring at lower elevations.
AprilMelting season. Low crowds, but muddy. Trails begin to thaw.
MayWildflowers begin at lower elevations. Still snow in the high country.
JuneTrails open up. Green landscapes. Waterfalls flowing. Mild temps.

Spring in Colorado

Late March, April and May Elopement

The spring weather brings everything from snowfall to warm and sunny weather. It’s slightly unpredictable and nothing is guaranteed. But, don’t let that stop you from eloping in the spring. The spring time is arguably one of the best seasons to get married in Colorado.

By late spring, the rich green landscape should be back. During this time, you could choose to go on a hike or have a picnic by the lake. Just don’t forget to pack a bag full of your favorite goodies, maybe a bottle of champagne, and a picnic blanket to sit on!

Spring is generally a quieter time to elope in Colorado, which offers you more opportunities for a private elopement. Out in the mountains, the warmer afternoon weather means you can comfortably explore in your wedding dress without freezing, but once the sun goes down, you’ll want to pack your favorite jacket to layer up and keep warm.

Pros:

  • Off-season pricing and less tourist traffic
  • Melting snow gives way to trickling waterfalls and early blooms at lower elevations

Cons:

  • “Mud season” in the mountains—melting snow = muddy trails
  • Unpredictable weather: could be sunny, snowy, or both in one day
  • Many mountain passes and high-elevation trails are still closed

Best for couples:
Adventurous couples who are flexible and open to spontaneity, and those wanting solitude in scenic spots without the summer crowds.

Summer in Colorado

June, July, & August elopement

Summer is typically the most popular season for adventure elopements. Many couples claim it as the best time to elope in Colorado. If you love the warmer weather, green vistas, flowing waterfalls, and fields full of wildflowers, this is your season!

During this time there are so many fun elopement activities to do — from kayaking on a mountain lake, hiking, camping, paddleboarding, fishing, off-roading and dancing under the stars. In the summertime, the options truly are endless for your outdoor elopement in Colorado!

That said, if you choose to elope in the high mountains, you will still face some cooler temperatures. Especially after the sun has set. So you’ll want to make sure to pack lightweight clothing to layer up with, drink plenty of water and bring sunscreen. During this peak time, you’ll have access to most trails and mountains.

That said, with easy access and beautiful weather comes increased crowds. You will find summer to be one of the busiest times in Colorado.

Pros:

  • Full access to high-altitude trails, alpine lakes, and mountain roads
  • Lush green landscapes and vibrant wildflowers
  • Long daylight hours for extended photo sessions

Cons:

  • Afternoon thunderstorms, especially in July
  • More crowded trails and tourist spots
  • Higher travel and lodging costs in mountain towns

Best for couples:
Nature lovers who want epic mountain views, wildflowers, and warm weather. Great for hiking elopements, backpacking, or paddleboarding ceremonies.

Fall in Colorado

September, October & November elopement

If you want your day to be filled with vibrant color and chasing the changing leaves, then you may want to consider a fall elopement. Peak colors will depend on your elevation. That said, September is considered one of the best months to get married in Colorado. For those looking to elope amongst the iconic changing leaves, you won’t want to miss fall in Colorado.

Further down the mountain, the weather is pretty much perfect. However, if you’re planning a higher elevation mountain elopement then it is best to plan to elope before the end of September. Much later and you will find that a majority of the mountain access closes for the season. As you gain elevation there is a higher risk of snowfall which causes unexpected road closures. That said, make sure to pack layers, and don’t be surprised if you run into some light snowfall up in the high country.

Fall is the perfect time to appreciate the leaves, go on a hike, get cozy by a fire, and sip on your favorite hot drinks. That said, the beautiful leaves bring in a lot of visitors who also want to experience the natural beauty. This is worth keeping that in mind when choosing the best months to elope in Colorado, especially if you are looking for a private ceremony.

Pros:

  • Stunning golden aspen foliage
  • Mild temperatures and stable weather
  • Fewer crowds than summer

Cons:

  • Timing the foliage is tricky—it changes fast and varies by elevation
  • Shorter days, and snow can arrive early at higher elevations
  • Some roads and passes may begin closing by mid-October

Best for couples:
Couples seeking a romantic, colorful mountain elopement with crisp air, cozy vibes, and dramatic autumn backdrops.
