So you think you want to elope in Arizona… Well let me tell you something, THAT’S THE BEST FREAKING DECISION EVER and you will 100% not regret it!! Arizona is unlike anything else on earth. From the cacti filled valleys, to vibrant red rocks, to crystal clear lakes, to snow covered mountains, Arizona is one of the best places you could elope. But don’t just take my word for you. Check out this location guide on 15 of the best places to elope in Arizona.

The south western region of the United States is simply packed with stunning elopement locations! I promise you, you will have a hard time deciding on just one location. So take a moment, imagine yourself dressed to the nine. You are reading your vows to your significant other. Now take a moment and try to picture it. Where are you standing? How does the sun feel as it brushes your face? What is the view like as you look off your left shoulder? If you are picturing stunning rock formations, a vibrant desert sunset, and potentially a breathtaking mountain range, you are in the right place. Welcome to the wild west! Welcome to the untamed state of Arizona.

Permits

Navigating the permit regulations and rules for certain areas can be so overwhelming and is often a main reason why couples WON’T elope in their dream location. Permits can be a major stressor for when it comes to planning an adventure elopement. That is why I have created this guide. A guide to not only help you plan the most epic adventure but as a guide to help you navigate the permit process for some of the BEST places to elope in Arizona.

So take a deep breath. Don’t let the logistics of permits, or vendors or anything get in the way of you planning your dream elopement. Have an open mind and and an open heart as you explore this guide and find your dream Arizona elopement location. 1. Sedona

Sedona has to be one of my favorite places to elope in Arizona. I don’t know if its the dramatic red rocks that tower over the desert floor or the way the lights up the valley at sunset. Whatever it is, Sedona truly is a place full of magic. Whether it be private jeep tours to more secluded locations, or access to hundreds of miles of hiking trails, Sedona has something for everyone. The downtown area of Sedona is filled with all the fun touristy shops, spas, a vibrant art scene, and access to some amazing food (especially Mexican food). Downtown Sedona offers visitors plenty of options for lodging and other accommodations making this location easily accessible regardless of the adventure you choose.

It’s hard to not fall in love with this location. The red rocks are simply breathtaking as they contrast with the vibrant green vegetation. Not only that, but you absolutely cannot miss a sunset in Sedona. Imagine saying your vows at the edge of cliff (safely at the edge) as the sun sets behind the crimson rocks. It’s no wonder Sedona is regarded as a place of healing, spirituality and adventure.

Do I need a permit? No! At this time you do not need a permit to elope in Sedona. Unless you are having a larger wedding, you can access any of the trails and overlooks for your adventure elopement. If you are having a full wedding in the Red Rocks District, you will need to apply and obtain a special use permit. More information can be found here.

Best time of year to visit: Most people consider the months between March and May the best months to visit. During this time, Sedona is a comfortable temperature and the flowers are starting to bloom. Late fall is also a great time to visit as the temperatures start to drop again. However, spring and fall tend to be the busiest times to visit. That said, Sedona is frequently visited year round. The summer months tend to relatively warm (temps reaching 90 to 100 and potential for afternoon rain showers). And winter brings cooler weather with potential for snow, which can be absolutely beautiful when contrasted with the red rocks.

**Pro Tip: To avoid crowds, visit Sedona during the week and plan to take a jeep tour to more remote locations for your elopement.

2. Grand Canyon

It’s hard to thing of Arizona without thinking about the Grand Canyon. Considered as one of the Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon is one of the most epic and beautiful places to elope in Arizona. This National Park offers some of the most wildly beautiful views of a canyon that leave many visitors simply speechless. Between the vibrant red rocks, the steep canyon walls, and the rushing Colorado River below, it’s no wonder thousands of people flock to this location every year just to indulge in the Grand Canyon’s natural beauty. The Grand Canyon offers so many activities for visitors. From horseback riding, to nature walks, to white water rafting the Grand Canyon really has something for everyone.

The park has two main locations. The North Rim and the South Rim. Both are teeming with wildlife and opportunities for adventure. The North Rim is considered more rugged. This is where you will find the adventure. Laced with hundreds of miles of off roading trails, the North Rim is typically less crowded due to its limited access. The South Rim however is easier to access with more options for lodging, restaurants and other activities! When I say that pictures simply don’t do this place justice, I genuinely mean it. There is something so grand and majestic about this place that your really have to be there to feel it.

Do I need a permit? Yes!! If you are looking to have a ceremony or any sort of vow reading you will need to apply for a permit. You can apply for that permit here. You can expect to pay anywhere from $250-$500 for your permit depending on the location you choose to have your ceremony.

Best time of year to visit: Early spring and late fall are arguably the best times to visit the Grand Canyon. The summer months are overcrowded with people who are visiting during their summer vacation. The temperature during the summer can reach well over 100 degrees. The winter can also be a desirable time to visit as the weather is cooler and there are less crowds. However, there is potential for snow in the weather. If you are willing to embrace the snow, it can be a beautiful time to elope.

Closest Airport: Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, from the airport it is a 1.5 hour drive to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. However, the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is only 3.5 hours away and will be considerably cheaper to fly in and out of.

3. Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

Despite Monument Valley’s remoteness, this location deserves all the hype. The valley is home to sandstone rock faces that stand anywhere from 400 to 1,000 feet tall. Monument Valley is nothing short of breathtaking. From the fragile rock pinnacles to the miles of mesas and buttes, this location will make you feel like you’ve entered another world. The valley is rich in tribal history and offers visitors the opportunity to immures themselves in the culture. Monument Valley really is nothing like you have ever experienced before.

Do I need a permit? You will need to obtain a Monument Valley Entrance Pass. For groups of 4 or more, you will also need to get a Navajo Tribal Park Special Use Permit. If there are less than 4 people in your group, you do not need a Special Use Permit.

Best time of year to visit: Spring and fall are the best times to visit the park. In the summer it can be very hot and overcrowded with visitors on their summer vacation. In the winter, the park gets very cold and can even get snow.

4. Saguaro National Park

Saguaro National Park is one of the least known National Park. That said, it should not be overlooked and it is well worth the visit. Located around Tucson, Arizona, Saguaro National Park is home to the Saguaro cacti a large native cactus that ultimately gave this park it’s name. In the park, visitors will quickly realize that this truly is one of the best places to elope in Arizona. Saguaro National Park really is an icon of the southwest and a treasure for those willing to explore it. Here you will find rugged mountains, fields of saguaros as the tower over the desert floor and wildlife that is unique to this part of the world.

The National Park is filled with hundreds of miles of hiking trails. The trails will take you through the vibrant desert floor and even up into the mountains. The desert is notorious for stunning sunsets that light up the mountains and the desert floor in vibrant pinks, oranges and purples. Sunset in the park is a spectacle you won’t want to miss. There really is something for everyone at Saguaro National Park.

Do I need a permit? You will need a special use permit which you can apply for here. Visitors will also need a National Park Entrance Pass. You can purchase an Annual Pass here.

Best time of year to visit: October to April is considered the best time to visit the park. During the summer months, temperatures in the park can exceed 100 degrees. Winter time is by far the most comfortable time to visit.

5. Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

There really isn’t anything quite like Glen Canyon on earth. If you are picturing a big beautiful blue lake surrounded by rich red rock, you are picturing Glen Canyon and the Lake Powell area. Glen Canyon is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground. Complete with scenic viewpoints, unique rock features and access to the clear blue waters of Lake Powell. Lake Powell is considered to be one of the most popular lakes in the state of Arizona. The lake is tucked among the rocky outcroppings of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

The Glen Canyon and Lake Powell area is the perfect location for those craving endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. This outdoor playground covers 1.25 million acres which offers visitors plenty of space to explore and find solitude in such a popular location. The unique rock features and vibrant rock walls that surround Lake Powell makes this location one of the best places to elope in Arizona. So find your own adventure either on the water or among the towering rock walls.

Do I need a permit? Yes! You will need to apply for a special use permit. You can apply for that here. Additionally, Entrance Passes will need to be purchased at the time of your the visit.

Best time of year to visit: Honestly, you can visit Glen Canyon year round. It really depends on what activities you wish to do while you are there. In spring and the fall, the weather is considered to be the most comfortable. However, if you wish to indulge in more of the water activities, summer might be the best time to visit. The warmer summer air makes Lake Powell the perfect swimming hole to cool off during your adventure elopement. The summer tends to be more crowded with visitors enjoying the lake during their summer vacations. If you do not wish to be on the water, winter might be a good time to visit because there will be less people. However, it might be on the colder side and there is potential that you could experience snow.

6. Horseshoe Bend

When people think about an epic elopement experience in Arizona, many of them are picturing Horseshoe Bend. This is a very popular location in Arizona, and for good reason. I mean look at those views!!! Horseshoe Bend looks like it was pulled straight out of a painting. The way the Colorado River curves around the stunning rock walls in such a way to create a horseshoe shape is what gave this infamous location its name. Horseshoe Bend is located near Page, AZ in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and is absolutely a location you do not want to miss. The dramatic landscape this location offers makes this one of the best places to elope in Arizona if you are chasing epic views and beautiful sunsets!!

Do I need a permit? You will need to apply for a special use permit. You can apply here. This location is managed by the city of Page. That said, there will be a $10 charge per vehicle to park in the parking lot. (Note: National Parks Passes will not be accepted).

Best time of year to visit: Similar to Glen Canyon, Horseshoe Bend is essentially open year round. The most comfortable weather will be in the spring or fall with summer being relatively warm and the winter being cold with potential for snowfall. Regardless of when you visit this location, you will want to make sure you visit at sunrise or sunset. You will also want to consider the crowds. Many people tend to visit around sunset. To avoid crowds, consider visiting at sunrise during the week.

Points of Interest: Horseshoe Bend is the main point of interest. Antelope Canyon is nearby and definitely worth the trip. Also refer to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Park for additional points of interest.

7. Salt River

The Salt River is located in the Tonto National Forest Area. This location is one that really turns your head. You will find yourself standing in the middle of the desert, surrounded by hundreds of cacti, with a rushing river off to your left. This location is perfect for couples looking to have a more laid back and casual elopement. Only an hour from the Phoenix area, the Salt River offers couples the option to have their ceremony and then dip their feet in the cool refreshing water of the Salt River. (I fully encourage you to bring your favorite swim suit and floaties and enjoy a float down the river).

If you are lucky, you might have the opportunity to see some wild horses!! This location can get pretty busy on the weekend, but with proper strategic planning and location scouting it is absolutely possible to have a semi private ceremony at one of Phoenix’s more popular oasis’.

Do I need a Permit? At this time, you do not need a permit for gatherings under 75 people. For ceremonies over 75 people, you will need to obtain a special use permit. The permit information can be found here. Due to the increasing number of visitor each year, this has potential to change! Some locations along the Salt River may require an entrance pass upon arrival.

Best time of year to visit: Summer in this area can reach well over 100 degrees. That said, if you are planning to float the river, summer can absolutely be an option. The most comfortable time to visit would be spring and fall.

8. Havasu Falls

This is one of the most STUNNING locations in the world! I am not even exaggerating. However, getting to this location is not for the faint of heart. If you are looking for an elopement that is filled with adventure and access to one of the most beautiful, sought after waterfalls in the world, you have found it. Havasu Falls is really the ultimate adventure elopement location. The turquoise blue waters that fills the river and the waterfalls throughout the region are unlike anything you have ever seen before. So are you up for the adventure?

In order to elope at one of the most unique locations in the world, you will be required to camp as day trips to the falls are not allowed. Visitors MUST stay at the campground or the Havasupai Lodge. The hike from the the rim to the campground is 10 miles all downhill, meaning it is another 10 mile hike uphill to return to your car. That being said, the hike is absolutely worth it because the views and the magic of this location is simply unmated. So are you ready to elope in one of the most sought after, bucket list locations in the world? Havasu Falls is honestly one of the most epic and adventurous places to elope in Arizona.

Do I need a permit? Yes! You will need to obtain a special use permit. Not only that but you will need to apply for a camping permit. It is required in order to visit Havasupai. The falls and campground sit on the Havasupai Indian Reservation and it is through the Havasupai Tribe that you will need to obtain a camping or lodging permit. Use this link to obtain a camping permit. Permits sell out quickly so you will want to obtain a permit as soon as they are released.

Best time of year to visit: The official season runs from Februarys to November. However, you are welcome to visit in the winter months, but keep in mind that the water will be cold as well as the outside air. Also not, that during June, July and August, the trail is subject to closure for flash floods as well as extreme heat reaching 115 degrees.

9. Superstition Mountains & Lost Dutchman State Park

You can’t visit the Phoenix area without considering the Superstition Mountains. A majority of the mountains are in the Tonto National Forest This infamous location is known for its rugged, volcanic mountain range. The Superstition Mountains and Lost Dutchman State Park areas are two of the more easily accessible elopement locations. The jagged mountains rise above the desert floor that is covered in cactus. When you think of a desert elopement in Arizona, the Superstition Mountains is most likely the first thing that comes to mind.

If you want to be surrounded by unique cacti with a dramatic mountain range serving as a backdrop, you have absolutely found the perfect location. The Superstition Mountains offers visitors some of the most incredible views, access to miles of hiking trails and all the desert scape you could ever dream of. This desert sanctuary really is one of the best places to elope in Arizona if you want all the desert elopement vibes.

Do I need a permit? Yes. You will need to apply and obtain a wedding or event permit to elope in the Superstition Mountains and Lost Dutchman State Park. You can apply here. When you arrive, you will also need to purchase an entrance pass.

Best time of year to visit: Spring and Fall tend to be the most desirable time to visit, but the winter months have the potential to be less crowded. It is not recommended to visit during the summer months (June-August) as the temperatures will reach well into the 100’s.

10. Vermilion Cliffs National Monument (The Wave)

Located on the Utah/Arizona boarder you will find one of the most photographed sandstone features. If you haven’t hear of the wave yet, scroll down and check it out before you say, “it’s just a rock”. The Wave is a little patch of paradise located in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument and Forest Area. The hike to The Wave is does not have a designated trail, but rather requires visitors to navigate using a GPS, or a compass and a map. This truly adds to the adventure that comes with eloping at The Wave; making it one of the most unique places to elope in Arizona. The Wave is one of the few locations on this location guide that is best photographed at high noon. Due to its unique features and vibrant colors, it’s no wonder people flock from across the globe to visit this beautiful natural formation.

Do I need a Permit? Yes!! The permit system is EXTREMELY competitive. There are only 64 people allowed to visit the wave each day. But don’t let deter you. With quite a bit of consistency and persistent, you will eventually be able to obtain a permit to visit The Wave. Permits are issued by the US Bureau of Land Management. You can begin the lottery process here.

Best time of year to visit: Spring (April-June) and fall (September-November) are the most popular times to visit. That said, you will have a better chance of obtaining an entrance permit if you intend to visit from December to February.

11. Mogollon Rim

If epic views seen from the edge of a cliff is your vibe, then the Mogollon Rim is definitely for you!! This beautiful location is the perfect escape from the Phoenix summer heat. The Mogollon Rim region covers 200 miles in the northern part of Arizona and offers dramatic white cliffs that overlook the pine trees. The drive up to the rim will take you through the pine forests and if you know where to look you can also find a bunch of lakes in this area. (Who knew there was so much water in Arizona).

The Mogollon Rim is one of the best places to elope in Arizona if you crave a touch of mountain air and expansive views. This location is part of the Coconino National Forest and offers visitors numerous opportunities for them to have their own adventure. Mogollon Rim is nothing short of an outdoor playground , so let’s go explore!

Do I need a permit? At this time you do not need a permit. This is subject to change. If you are having a larger event, you may need a permit which you can find more information here.

Best time of year to visit: Fall is by far the best time of year to visit. However, this location is open year round for people to visit.

Points of Interest: Fossil Creek, Rim Road, Verde Hot Springs, Tonto Natural Bridge

12. Lockett Meadow

Located in the Coconino National Forest, Lockett Meadow is a little patch of heaven in the Flagstaff area. This location offers views of the San Francisco Peaks and is surrounded by aspen trees. Making this a desirable location to visit during the Fall when all the leaves are changing colors. Lockett Meadow has access to a handful of other hiking trails to further explore the area and find more private areas. This is a wonderful place to go camping as it is near a lake and offers visitors the opportunity to surround themselves in the wilderness area. The hiking trails near the campground leads hikers through beautiful meadows which makes you feel as if you aren’t even in Arizona anymore.

Do I need a permit? No. If you are having a larger wedding (more than 75 people) you will need to obtain a special use permit.

Best time of year to visit: Fall. During this time, the leaves on the aspen trees will be changing making it a beautiful location for photos.

13. Eastern Arizona

Eastern Arizona is full of beautiful hidden gems. I spent a large part of my childhood exploring the valleys and mountains of Eastern Arizona. This part of the country is overflowing with beautiful landscape. From rugged mountain ranges, to pine tree forests, to golden grasslands, to traditional desert landscape, Eastern Arizona really has something for everyone. If you are looking for a lesser known location that is far less crowded than some of the other popular locations, Eastern Arizona could be one of the best places to elope in Arizona. 14. Watson Lake

On the outskirts of the city of Prescott, AZ you will find a beautiful lake oasis just wait for you to escape from the desert heat. Unfortunately, swimming is not allowed at this lake. However, you can explore the abundant blue waters on a kayak or on your canoe. The vibrant blue lake is surrounded by granite boulders. Not only that but this location has tons of trails for those looking to enjoy the park by foot. The waterfront is truly breathtaking and the terrain is so unique. You will see rock features not only around the water’s edge, but in the lake as well. This really is a uniquely beautiful location and one of the best places to elope in Arizona if you are looking to indulge in some lake side activities.

Do I need a permit? At this time, you do NOT need a special use permit. You will however need to purchase a parking pass upon arrival. The parking pass is $3.00.

Best time of year to visit: Spring is arguably the best time to visit. Spring is the most popular time to visit because all the flowers are blooming at this time. That said, summer is also a great time to explore the lake especially if you are planning to take part in any lake activities to escape the Arizona heat. Watson Lake sits at 5,000 ft which makes this location cooler in the summer than many other popular Arizona elopement locations.

15. Slot Canyons

You’ve probably heard of slot canyons, maybe you’ve even seen a few photos of some slot canyons, but have you ever considered eloping in a slot canyon? In my opinion, eloping in a slot canyon is one of the most unique adventures in Arizona. Not to mention one of the COOLEST locations to visit! A slot canyon is a long, narrow crevasse of eroded sandstone creating a deep gorge. Unfortunately, a lot of the easily accessible slot canyons are allowing couples to host ceremonies anymore due to overcrowding issues. That said, if you want wedding photos taken in a slot canyon there are a few options for obtaining the necessary permits. We can also explore some of the less popular slot canyons which can be accessed by via jeep, hiking or on a boat!

Do I need a permit: This will depend on which slot canyon you want. At this time, many of the slot canyons are on Navajo land and require a tour to access. So the short answer is YES! In order to have photos in a slot canyon, we will need to obtain a permit or sign up for a tour.

Best time of year to visit: Spring and fall will provide the most comfortable weather for exploring the slot canyon. That being said, anytime you can get a permit for a slot canyon is a good time to visit!

Closest Airport: Many slot canyons are located in Norther Arizona. That said, Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is probably the closest however, Phoenix Sky Harbor will most likely be the cheapest option.
