This guide walks you through how to elope in Sedona complete with with location advice, permit info, and everything I think every couple should know before planning their day here.

1. Pick the Best Time of Year

Sedona’s weather plays a huge role in shaping the look, feel, and overall experience of your elopement day. From spring’s mild temperatures and blooming flowers to the crisp, golden glow of fall, each season brings its own kind of magic to this area. Even winter has its perks, offering quiet trails, cooler temperatures, and the occasional dusting of snow. Winter in Sedona can be truly breathtaking. To help you visualize how these seasonal shifts might influence your day—from lighting to weather to crowd levels—I’ve outlined the highlights of each season below.

Photographer Tip:
If you want privacy, choose sunrise. If you want more epic colors, choose sunset

2. Choose Your Perfect Sedona Elopement Location

I scout locations year round so that I know which location will give you the best light, privacy, and experience depending on what you are looking for. Here are the most popular locations I recommend to couples (I also have a handful of more secret locations that I’d love to share):

Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is the iconic Sedona elopement location, and for good reason. Its towering sandstone buttes and fiery red cliffs create one of the most dramatic ceremony backdrops you’ll find anywhere. The hike to the top is short but steep, with some scrambling required, so it’s ideal for adventurous couples who don’t mind a challenge. The payoff? Unreal panoramic views, glowing red light at sunset, and that magical sense of being on top of the world. If you want drama, intimacy, and a bit of adrenaline, Cathedral is a absolute dream.

Bell Rock

Bell Rock is perfect for couples who want stunning red rock scenery that doesn’t involve a difficult hike. With multiple easy access points, wide open areas, and gentle inclines, it’s an excellent choice if you’re bringing guests or want to keep things simple. Despite its accessibility, Bell Rock offers tons of variety—smooth red rock platforms, desert vegetation, formations in every direction, and great light during both sunrise and sunset. It’s a versatile location that works beautifully for any elopement style.

Courthouse Vista

Courthouse Vista offers sweeping panoramic views with minimal effort. A short, easy walk puts you in the middle of classic Sedona scenery including towering rock formations, sprawling desert landscape, and a beautiful area for golden hour. This spot is particularly breathtaking at sunrise when the sun hits the formations just right, but it’s equally stunning during sunset when warm tones flood the valley. If you want big views without a strenuous hike, Courthouse Vista is a top pic

Merry-Go-Round Rock

For couples seeking a true adventure, Merry-Go-Round Rock delivers an experience you’ll never forget. To get here, you’ll need a 4×4 vehicle (or I can connect you with a private jeep tour which can be such a BLAST). Once you’re at the top, the views are absolutely unreal, massive cliffs, stunning red rocks, and one of the most expansive vistas in Sedona. It’s one of the best sunset locations in my opinion as it offers wide open space and breathtaking cliffs that light up as the sun sets.

Red Rock Crossing

If you love the idea of water, greenery, and classic Sedona views, Red Rock Crossing might be your perfect match. This quite area features a small creek, cottonwood trees, and one of the most famous views of Cathedral Rock. It’s ideal for couples who want a softer, more peaceful vibe and prefer a location that’s easy to access without hiking. Sunset is especially beautiful here, with the red rocks glowing above the sparkling water.

And a Few More Secrets…

Beyond these well-loved spots, Sedona has countless hidden nooks that offer more privacy, softer lighting, or unique backdrops that aren’t on the typical tourist trail. I keep these special locations reserved for my couples to ensure you get an experience that feels intimate, exclusive, and tailored to your vision. Whether you want a secluded cliff edge, a quiet forest pocket, or a private sandstone plateau, I’ll help you find the perfect match. 3. Permits & Rules (Don’t Stress—This Is My Specialty!)

One of the biggest benefits of working with a photographer/planner who is local to Arizona is that I handle the permit research for you. Sedona’s rules can feel confusing, but here’s the simplified version of what you need to know if you plan to elope in Sedona:

Most Sedona trails do NOT require a ceremony permit

As long as:

  • You have under 75 people
  • You’re not setting up structures or decor
  • You’re not blocking trails
  • You’re in an open-use forest area

Some locations DO require permits

  • Crescent Moon Ranch
  • Red Rock State Park
  • Certain private or tribal lands
  • Some commercial filming areas

Restrictions to Know

  • No arches or large décor
  • No amplified music
  • No confetti, petals, or rice
  • Stay on trails to protect fragile desert plants

I always help couples choose a location that fits their vision, budget and accessibility needs so that there aren’t any surprises on the wedding day.

4. Getting Your Marriage License in Arizona

The legal part of your Sedona elopement is surprisingly simple compared to many other states, which is one of the reasons couples love eloping here. Whether you’re planning a full ceremony with an officiant or opting for a symbolic exchange of vows at sunrise, getting legally married in Arizona is straightforward and stress-free.

Where to Get Your License

To obtain your marriage license, you’ll need to visit one of the local county clerk offices. Sedona sits between two counties, so you have flexible options depending on where you’re staying:

  • Coconino County Clerk (Flagstaff) — Perfect if you’re flying into Flagstaff or spending time in Northern Arizona.
  • Yavapai County Clerk (Cottonwood, Camp Verde, or Prescott) — Closer to Sedona and generally the most convenient option for couples arriving in town.

Many couples choose the Yavapai County office in Cottonwood, as it’s a quick 25–30 minute drive from Sedona.

What You’ll Need

Both partners must appear in person at the clerk’s office with:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or state ID)
  • Payment for the marriage license fee (usually around $98—cash or card accepted)

The Best Part? No Waiting Period

Unlike many states, Arizona does not have a waiting period, which means you can get married the same day you pick up your license. This is incredibly helpful for destination couples who may be arriving only a day or two before their elopement.

How Long the License Is Valid

Your Arizona marriage license is valid for one year from the date it’s issued. This gives you tons of flexibility and peace of mind if travel plans shift.

After the Ceremony

To make your marriage official:

  • Your officiant (or judge, if you’re doing your legal ceremony beforehand) must sign the license.
  • You’ll also need two witnesses, which can be friends, family, your photographer, or even other hikers on the trail which can often become a fun memory!
  • The signed license must be returned to the clerk’s office within 30 days.

Most officiants will return the signed license for you, but it’s always good to confirm.

5. Work With the Right Sedona Elopement Vendors

As your photographer and planner, I help you build a vendor team that fits your vision. I have vetted the best Sedona vendors who specialize in desert weddings. These vendors are people I trust to help bring you wedding day to life.

Recommended Vendors:

  • Officiant

  • Videographer
  • Private chef for a post-ceremony dinner

Every vendor plays an important role in your elopement, ensuring that each detail; from your vows to your photos to your flowers, comes together seamlessly to create a truly memorable and stress-free day.

6. Plan the Right Activities to Celebrate Your Way

7. Create a Custom Elopement Timeline

Planning the timeline is part of the planning process where your day really starts to come alive. During this phase, I take the time to understand how you want your day to feel. Then I design each element of your day around the best lighting, and weather conditions. All while factoring in the overall pace of the day to ensure we are not rushed or feeling overwhelmed at any point. From the hike to the ceremony to the portraits, I carefully map out how the day will flow so that everything feels effortless and natural. By thinking through every detail in advance, I help you enjoy the day without worrying about the logistics. All while capturing all the meaningful moments in a way that feels candid and intentional.

8. Where to Stay in Sedona (My Personal Favorites)

Choosing the right place to stay during your Sedona elopement does more than provide comfort, it sets the tone for your entire day. From the moment you wake up, to getting ready for your ceremony, your lodging serves as a backdrop for these moments. Which is why finding a place with beautiful lighting, and intimate spaces for capturing certain moments is so important. Picking a location with a clean design, stunning views, and easy access to your ceremony location ensures your elopement flows smoothly while adding a level of comfort and luxury to your day.

Best Hotels

  • L’Auberge de Sedona Nestled creekside, this luxury resort offers a romantic setting with stunning red rock views. Its natural surroundings and beautifully designed interiors make it ideal for getting-ready photos and quiet moments.
  • Amara Resort A modern boutique hotel with a minimalist vibe. Floor-to-ceiling windows, beautiful pool areas, and stunning outdoor spaces provide plenty of photography opportunities.
  • Enchantment Resort Located in the heart of Boynton Canyon, this resort is surrounded by epic canyon walls and offers a mix of luxury and adventure. Its dramatic landscapes and private decks make it perfect for sunrise or sunset portraits.

Best Airbnbs

Airbnbs are great for couples looking for privacy and flexibility. I work to help all of my find an airbnb that compliments their personality and the vibe they are looking to achieve. When choosing a home, I recommend looking for:

  • Large windows – Natural light is essential for relaxed getting-ready photos.
  • Warm, earthy tones – Interiors that complement Sedona’s red rocks create cohesive, beautiful images.
  • Outdoor spaces with red rock views – Balconies, patios, or gardens allow for intimate moments and sunset photos without leaving your property.
  • Unique touches – Cozy fireplaces, rustic décor, or local artwork can add character and charm to your photos. Find a place that feels like YOU!

Pro Tip:

Consider how accessible your location is to your ceremony and photography spots. A place that’s close to your elopement location will save travel time and allow for more relaxed, stress-free moments throughout the day.

9. What to Wear for Your Sedona Elopement

Choosing the right outfit for your Sedona elopement is about balancing style, comfort, and practicality. With rugged trails, desert winds, and dramatic red rock backdrops, what you wear will impact both your experience and your photos. I recommend that my couples wear and pack layers because you never know what the weather will throw your way and you will want to be comfortable on your wedding day.

Check out this post: “How to Travel with Your Wedding Dress” for more information on traveling with your wedding attire.

For the Brides:

  • Choose a dress you can move in: Lightweight or flowy fabrics like chiffon, tulle, or silk allow for easy hiking, climbing, and walking across uneven terrain. Avoid heavy fabrics or long trains that can snag on rocks or brush.
  • Flowy skirts photograph beautifully in the wind: Dresses with layers or long skirts create dramatic motion in photos, especially on cliffside or open landscapes.
  • Bring hiking boots or supportive shoes: You can swap into sandals or dress shoes at your ceremony spot, but sturdy footwear is essential for hiking safely. Some of my couples enjoy chacos or Blundstones.
  • Hair and makeup considerations: Updos, braids, pinned styles, or loose waves secured with hairpins work best for windy conditions. Lightweight, natural makeup is ideal for the desert heat.
  • Optional accessories: A simple shawl, scarf, or cape can add style and warmth for cooler mornings or evenings.

For the Grooms:

  • Neutral tones photograph beautifully: Colors like tan, cream, sage, rust, or soft earth tones complement the red rock landscape and desert palette.
  • Breathable fabrics are key: Linen, cotton, or lightweight blends keep you comfortable in warm weather while looking polished.
  • Comfortable shoes for rocky terrain: Hiking shoes, boots, or sturdy sneakers are recommended for trails; you can change into dress shoes at your ceremony site if you want.
  • Layering for variable weather: Even in warmer months, mornings and evenings can be cool. A light jacket or vest can be practical without compromising style.
  • Subtle accessories: A boutonniere, watch, or tie in natural tones can complete the look without feeling heavy or out of place in nature.

10. Add Personalized Touches

One of the best parts of eloping in Sedona is that your day can truly reflect who you are as a couple. Unlike a traditional wedding, an elopement gives you the freedom to focus entirely on your love story, your values, and the experiences that make your relationship unique. Personal touches can make your elopement feel intimate, meaningful, and completely unforgettable.

Here are some ideas I’ve photographed and planned for couples over the years:

  • Your favorite coffee in the morning
  • A champagne toast on the cliff
  • Bring meaningful props or family heirlooms
  • Sage or palo santo ritual
  • Handwritten vows
  • Get matching tattoos
  • A jeep adventure between locations
  • Slow dance to your favorite song
  • Incorporate a unity ceremony in your ceremony
  • Bring your dog
  • Facetime family
  • Read notes from family members

Sedona brings its own magic—you just get to layer your love story into it.
