2. Maroon Bells – Aspen
Located in the Elk Mountains near Aspen, the Maroon Bells consist of Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, both towering over 14,000 feet. These striking mountains reflect off Maroon Lake, creating a mirror-like effect that’s particularly magical at sunrise and during the fall when the aspen trees turn brilliant gold.
Terrain: Twin mountain peaks, reflective alpine lake, wildflower meadows
Closest City: Aspen (20 minutes)
Why It’s Special: One of the most photographed mountain scenes in North America. When you think of Colorado, you are probably thinking about the Maroon Bells.
The mirrored lake with the twin peaks in the background makes for a particularly beautiful ceremony setting. Most couples enjoy hiking around the area after the ceremony. This is where to elope in Colorado if you simply want to be left speechless.
Things to Do:
- Hike the Maroon Lake Scenic Loop
- Take a hot air balloon ride over Aspen
- Dine at five-star restaurants
- Visit the Aspen Art Museum
Accommodations: Aspen features luxury resorts, boutique hotels, and romantic mountain chalets.
Despite being incredibly popular and relatively crowded, the Maroon Bells is one of my favorite locations in Colorado simply because of the natural beauty. If you want to elope here, I recommend making a reservation at the Maroon Bells Amphitheater. This ensures you (and your guests if you have guests) will have a private ceremony. For more information on the Maroon Bells Amphitheater and making reservations, use this link to book your date.
💡 Pro Tip: To preserve the pristine environment, access is limited during peak seasons (typically mid-June through early October) and requires a shuttle reservation or private vehicle permit. You can find more information about the shuttle bus here. This helps maintain the area’s quiet, almost spiritual atmosphere—perfect for a peaceful, intimate elopement.

3. Great Sand Dunes National Park
Located in southern Colorado, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve protects the tallest sand dunes on the continent, formed by wind and water over thousands of years. The park spans over 149,000 acres and includes not just the dune field, but also grasslands, alpine forests, and part of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.
The dunes themselves are accessible year-round and offer open-space elopement options with no formal ceremony sites—perfect for couples wanting privacy. Weather can be extreme: hot, dry summers and cold, windy winters. Spring and early summer bring the Medano Creek, a shallow, seasonal stream at the base of the dunes that mimics a natural beach environment. Nearby Zapata Falls, just outside the park, is another popular and scenic spot for intimate ceremonies and portraits.
Terrain: Massive sand dunes, alpine forest, wetlands, mountain backdrops
Closest City: Alamosa (35 minutes)
Why It’s Special: Towering dunes against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains
If you want an elopement setting that feels like another planet, the Great Sand Dunes National Park is a stunning and unique choice. Sunrise and sunset offer magical lighting and minimal crowds.
Things to Do:
- Go sandboarding or dune sledding
- Stargaze in one of Colorado’s best Dark Sky Parks
- Visit nearby Zapata Falls
- Explore alpine trails and Medano Pass (4WD required)
Accommodations: Alamosa offers hotels, motels, and unique glamping or camping near the park.
The Great Sand Dunes is one of my favorite locations in Colorado. The unique landscape is perfect for couples looking to go against the grain and have an elopement experience that is as bold and different at they are. In order to elope in the Great Sand Dunes National Park, you will need a permit, which I can help you obtain to make sure we are applying for the right permits. This permit system ensures couples are getting a more private experience while out in the dunes.
4. Telluride
Telluride is located in a remote box canyon in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Once a silver mining town, it has evolved into a world-class destination known for its scenic beauty, historic charm, and outdoor recreation. The surrounding mountains rise sharply from the town, creating a dramatic natural amphitheater that’s ideal for couples seeking a stunning elopement backdrop. Telluride offerens couples anything from world class skiing to epic hiking adventure.
Terrain: Box canyon, alpine forests, waterfalls, and 14,000-ft peaks
Closest City: Telluride (walkable historic downtown)
Why It’s Special: Breathtaking alpine setting with access to mountaintop elopements and waterfalls
Telluride is an elopement dream for couples looking for drama and luxury. Consider eloping at the top of the gondola or beneath Bridal Veil Falls—the highest waterfall in Colorado.
Things to Do:
- Ride the gondola between Telluride and Mountain Village
- Hike to scenic locations like Bear Creek Falls
- Attend music or film festivals
- Explore historic downtown and art galleries

💡 Pro Tip: Permits may be required for ceremonies depending on the location and group size, especially in forest service or wilderness areas. I am happy to help you navigate the permit process to ensure we obtain all the necessary permits to have an elopement that is completely stress free.
5. Garden of the Gods – Colorado Springs

Terrain: Red sandstone spires, desert-like landscape, and Pikes Peak views
Closest City: Colorado Springs (5–10 minutes)
Why It’s Special: Striking red rock formations and easy access with minimal permit requirements

Things to Do:
- Walk among the towering rock formations
- Visit the nearby Manitou Springs
- Drive to the summit of Pikes Peak
- Enjoy a spa day at The Broadmoor
Accommodations: Colorado Springs offers everything from boutique hotels to luxury resorts and Airbnbs.
Although Garden of the Gods is considered one of the best places to elope in Colorado, I will be honest, it is not my favorite. This location is incredibly crowded due to its proximity to Colorado Springs and does not offer couples the opportunity to have privacy. This location is STUNNING and unique in it’s own way, I would not plan to have a full day elopement experience at this location. Rather, consider this location as a “day after” location or even an option for a short sunset portrait session.
💡 Pro Tip: Garden of the Gods is VERY popular and can be crowded. Consider going to this location at sunrise and during the week to avoid crowds.

6. Crested Butte
Crested Butte, located in central Colorado’s Elk Mountains, is a former mining town turned year-round outdoor destination. The town itself has a laid-back vibe, with colorful Victorian buildings with a strong arts and outdoor culture.
Terrain: Wildflower meadows, alpine lakes, and lush mountain ranges
Closest City: Crested Butte
Why It’s Special: Stunning seasonal beauty with a small-town vibe and endless adventure
Known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, Crested Butte is an ideal summer elopement destination. Winter also offers snowy backdrops perfect for cozy mountain ceremonies. Much of the land around Crested Butte is U.S. Forest Service land, so small ceremonies generally don’t require permits unless they involve structures or large groups.

- Hike to a remote location or waterfall
- Go mountain biking or paddleboarding
- Explore Crested Butte’s artsy downtown
- Visit during the Wildflower Festival in July
Accommodations: Romantic B&Bs, luxury cabins, and ski-in/ski-out lodges.
In my opinion, Crested Butte is in a separate category. The mountains are unlike any other mountains in the state and the opportunities for private ceremonies are endless. If you are looking for a true adventure elopement in Colorado, Crested Butte should be at the top of your list.

Closest City: Ouray
Why It’s Special: Called the “Switzerland of America” for its dramatic alpine scenery
Ouray is a hidden gem for couples looking to elope away from the crowds. Waterfall lovers will find Cascade Falls and Box Canyon ideal for intimate ceremonies. This is where to elope in Colorado if you’re looking for a European destination wedding while staying stateside.

Due to its remote location and small size, permits are typically not required for small, informal ceremonies, but I always check local regulations to ensure we have the most up to date information.

Why It’s Special: A laid-back town surrounded by the towering Collegiate Peaks
Elopements in Buena Vista can range from riverside vows to summit ceremonies or hot springs soaks. The terrain offers both high desert and alpine mountain contrast. If you want it, Buena Vista has it. That said, permits may be required for ceremonies in wilderness or public lands in the surrounding area, so checking with Chaffee County and U.S. Forest Service is recommended.
Things to Do:
- Soak in Mount Princeton Hot Springs
- Raft the Arkansas River
- Hike or bike through the Collegiate Peaks
- Explore downtown’s coffee shops and local art
Accommodations: Cabins, glamping resorts, riverside inns, and luxury vacation rentals.

Unlike more crowded national parks, the monument sees fewer visitors per year, offering couples the chance to celebrate their day in a quiet and private space. With easily accessible overlooks, scenic trails, and epic sunsets, it’s perfect for an unforgettable elopement day.
